Indio police arrested a motorist on suspicion of driving under the influence during a enforcement operation, authorities said Tuesday.

Out of 30 vehicles contacted, one driver was arrested for DUI and police issued eight citations for various traffic violations on Monday, according to the Indio Police Department.

“We are committed to taking impaired drivers off the road,” the department said in a statement. “Driving under the influence is not only dangerous, but also has major consequences.”

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
