Indio police issued more than 200 citations for traffic violations during a distracted driving enforcement operation, it was announced Friday.
Police, in collaboration with the Valley Motor Enforcement team, cited 222 drivers during Wednesday’s operation.
“Despite repeated efforts to warn drivers about the hands-free cell phone law, some drivers continue to use their phones while operating a vehicle,” Sgt. Peter Fuentes said in a statement. “Our ultimate goal is to change behaviors that help make our roads easier.”
Police said using a cell phone while driving is punishable by a fine, and a second-time violation within 36 months of a prior conviction will result in a point added to a driver’s record.
Funding was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
