Pockets of rain doused select portions of the Southland on Wednesday as a low-pressure system moved into the area, and the chance of precipitation was expected to linger into Thursday.

National Weather Service forecasters said scattered thunderstorms erupted in the Antelope Valley and eastern San Gabriel Mountains late Wednesday afternoon, prompting them to issue a small stream flood advisory.

Some heavy rain and even small hail is possible in the affected area, according to the NWS. There were also reports of lightning strikes in the Pasadena area.

A roughly 20 percent chance of precipitation is expected to continue Wednesday night, then after some morning clouds and fog, there’s another chance of rain Thursday afternoon.

The rain is the result of “an unstable air mass associated with an upper-level low-pressure system.” Besides L.A. County, the rain threat also applied to Santa Barbara, Ventura, Orange and Riverside counties.

The greatest chances of thunderstorms are in mountain areas, forecasters said.

Overnight lows Wednesday night were expected to be in the 50s and 60s. Temperatures are expected in the 60s and 70s on Thursday.

In recent days, there were expectations that temperatures would spike again this coming weekend, but the latest NWS forecast indicates they’ll generally remain at Wednesday’s levels through Tuesday. However, there will be some increase in temperatures next week, forecasters said.
