The predicted blizzard rolling into the Midwest and East Coast resulted in the cancellation of 70 flights and delays of 86 more at Los Angeles International Airport Friday.
For the period covering 12:01 a.m. today to 2 a.m. Saturday, the winter storm caused the cancellation of 47 departing flights, out of 808 scheduled departures, and 23 arriving flights, out of 811 scheduled arrivals, according to Nancy Suey Castles of Los Angeles World Airports, the city agency that operates LAX and the Van Nuys Airport.
Another 47 arriving flights and 39 departures were delayed, Castles said.
“Almost all of the cancelled arriving and departing flights were to/from Midwest and East Coast cities impacted by the winter storm, primarily Washington, D.C., New York, Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Nashville and Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.,” Castles said.
A ground stop at San Francisco International Airport due to rain, wind and fog also caused “significant delays and a few cancellations for numerous flights between LAX and SFO,” Castles said.
Departing passengers and those picking up arriving passengers were advised to check the status of flights with the airlines before going to LAX.
Nationwide, there had been more than 3,500 flight cancellations and more than 7,200 delays as of early evening, according to FlightAware.com. Those figures, however, are not just for flights affected by the blizzard.
