A long period south swell is expected to bring elevated surf to many beaches of Southern California through Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service office in Oxnard said most beaches in Los Angeles county can expect surf heights of 3 to 6 feet, with the largest surf on south- to southwest-facing beaches.

The weather service warned beachgoers of an increased threat of drowning due to strong rip currents. If caught in a rip current, do not try to swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore to get out of the rip current, then swim back to the shore.

The forecast for the central Los Angeles area from Malibu to Long Beach calls for low clouds and fog in the morning followed by sunny conditions with highs from the upper 60s to mid 70s at the beaches to around 80 inland. Lows overnight will be in the upper 50s to mid 60s.

It will be mostly sunny in coastal Orange County with highs 70 to 75.
