A pileup involving more than a dozen vehicles on a rain-slick stretch of Interstate 5 in the Torrey Pines area left seven people injured Tuesday afternoon and closed the southbound side of the freeway for about an hour.
The series of chain-reaction collisions near Carmel Valley Road happened shortly before 2 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A total of 13 to 15 vehicles were involved, officials said.
Medics took the injured to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of minor to moderately serious trauma, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported.
The southbound side of the freeway in the area was closed into the mid-afternoon due to the spate of rainy-day crashes, according to Caltrans.
