The tail end of a winter storm moved across the Southland Friday and a cold weather alert for the Antelope Valley and Los Angeles County mountain areas has been extended through Monday due to wind-chill temperatures expected to fall below freezing at night, according to the National Weather Service.
In the Acton area, along the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, rain mixed with ice fell. The rain lasted about 45 minutes, according to reports from the scene.
As a result of the cold weather alert, Dr. Muntu Davis, the county’s public health officer, noted that children, the elderly and people with disabilities or special medical needs would be especially vulnerable, and that extra precautions should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when outside.
Davis suggested that everyone dress in layers of warm clothing if spending time outdoors, and protect the head, hands and feet from the cold by wearing a hat, scarf, gloves and socks.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service said dry weather is expected through the weekend, with another chance of rain for northern sections of the Southland on Sunday night into Monday. Dry conditions are expected Tuesday through Thursday.
Those who need shelter can take advantage of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s Winter Shelter Program, and can go to www.lahsa.org or call the 2-1-1 information line. For the deaf and hard of hearing, call the TDD line at 1-800-660-4026.
Temperatures are expected to be slightly warmer but still below normal through Monday, with gradual warming through the middle of next week, the NWS said.
