A cooling trend will bring relief to Southern California Monday after soaring temperatures set records for this time of year, forecasters said Monday.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the 70s for most of Los Angeles and Orange County throughout the week and into next weekend, according to the National Weather Service, with some areas only reaching the upper 60s Monday and Tuesday.

“Monday temperatures will come crashing down, with gusty coastal and desert winds in the afternoon and evening,” the NWS said. “Temperatures will drop further Tuesday and drizzle will be possible. Cooler conditions will last through the weekend, with low clouds and fog pushing back into the valleys.”

Highs reached the lower 90s in parts of the valley areas on Sunday, the upper 70s at the beaches and the 80s elsewhere.

Saturday was even warmer, with records for that date set in Burbank (101 degrees), Long Beach (95), Woodland Hills (100), downtown Los Angeles (99) and Anaheim (98).

One person suffered heat exhaustion Saturday while hiking in the Hollywood Hills and had to be hospitalized. Firefighters and paramedics dispatched at 11:11 a.m. to 3824 Mount Lee Drive conducted a hoist operation to extraction the man from the location, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.

In Orange County, the Southern Section Division 3 track and field prelims at Yorba Linda High School were paused due to extreme heat as the mercury reached 97 degrees, according to Rich Gonzalez, editor of PrepCalTrack. The meet resumed at 5 p.m., Gonzalez wrote on social media.

In Long Beach, Southern California Edison reported that more than 5,300 customers lost power Saturday afternoon from an outage reported at 9:10 a.m. Power had been restored as of Sunday morning.
