With a mini heat wave expected this week, Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday that Los Angeles has activated cooling centers to keep residents safe.
“As we experience high temperatures this week, I urge Angelenos to stay safe, stay cool and stay hydrated,” Bass said in a statement. “While peak heat is expected Wednesday, July 9, and Thursday, July 10, City resources are available throughout L.A. all week for Angelenos to beat the heat.”
The city has hundreds of locations open for relief, including recreation and parks facilities, pools and library branches. Locations and hours are available at laparks.org/reccenter and lapl.org/branches.
Residents can also sign up at NotifyLA.org for heat and weather alerts.
The mayor’s Office of Public Safety will coordinate with the Emergency Management Department, Fire Department, Police Department, Recreation and Parks, as well as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to respond as needed.
Meanwhile, LADWP announced that it is offering rebates of up to $275 on air conditioners through its Cool LA initiative for income-qualified customers.
“Cool LA continues our commitment to serving all of our customers, especially the most vulnerable and those living in underserved communities impacted the most by climate change,” Janisse Quiñones, DWP CEO and chief engineer, said in a statement.
Eligible customers can receive up to $275 for Energy Star-rated window and through-the-wall units, and up to $225 for Title 20-compliant portable units. Some air conditioners may be available at no cost depending on manufacturer availability, officials said.
To qualify for the Cool LA rebate, LADWP customers must have an active electric account and be a current participant in one of the following discount programs at time of purchase: EZ-Save Program, Senior Citizen/Disability Lifeline Rate Program, Life-Support Equipment Discount Program, and/or Physician Certified Allowance Discount.
Under the Cool LA initiative, DWP also has the Efficient Product Marketplace providing rebates for other energy-efficient products available to all residential customers with an active electric account.
