Two brothers were shot in South Los Angeles, one fatally, in an apparent gang-related attack by two assailants who drove up to the victims, got out of their vehicle and fired, police said.

The shooting happened about 6:50 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of 97th Street and Stanford Avenue, said Sgt. James Linder of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Southeast Station.

Both victims were hospitalized in critical condition, but one of them, who was 43, was pronounced dead at about 11 p.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Greg Halka, also of the Southeast Station. His name was withheld, pending family notification. His brother, who is 25, is expected to survive.

A motive for the shooting was unknown.

“We’re still trying to piece it together but common sense tells you it was a gang shooting,” Linder said.

No reliable suspect information was immediately available, he said.

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the LAPD’s Southeast Division at (213) 972-7828. Anonymous tips can be phoned to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
