Chris Christie’s value as New Jersey governor has been in doubt for a while, but not his usefulness to social media snarks.

With blistering speed, mocking memes have appeared in the wake of news that the Republican presidential loser sunned himself (with family and friends) at a beach closed amid a budget crisis.

“Christie, for his part, was dismissive of the controversy in an interview on Monday with a local TV station — saying of the Star Ledger’s pictures: ‘They actually caught a politician being where he was going to be with the people he said he was going to be with, his wife and his children and their friends. So I’m sure they’re going to get a Pulitzer Prize for this one because they actually proved they caught me doing what I said to do with the people I said I was going to be with,’” reported CNN.

Christie tweeted: “NJ beaches are open in 119 of our our 130 miles of coastline. Come and enjoy them–but use sunscreen and hydrate!”

CNN notes that a recent Quinnipiac University poll put Christie’s approval rating at just 15 percent, “the worst approval rating for any governor in any state poll ever conducted by Quinnipiac.”

What explains it? asked Chris Cillizza of CNN.

“Either Christie is actively working to destroy any political future he might have or he has simply stopped caring,” Cillizza said. “The latter option is more plausible. Christie is term-limited out of office early next year. He has zero interest in running for the U.S. Senate. …Christie’s only option is to be a second-wave Trump administration appointee; he is regularly rumored as a chief of staff possibility if and when Reince Priebus leaves or is ushered out.”
