A robbery suspect who led various police agencies on a chase through Orange County was apprehended Thursday afternoon when he ran into a halfway house in Santa Ana, police said.

The suspect — whose name was not immediately released — was stealing a purse in the Brea Mall just before 1:40 p.m. when he got into a scuffle with security guards who confronted him, Brea police Lt. Darrin Devereux said.

The suspect fled in a black BMW convertible, but returned to the scene about two hours later, Devereux said.

Investigators suspect he was there to pick up a “cohort,” the lieutenant said.

Brea police chased the suspect, but suspended the pursuit because of the high speed and because he was running red lights, Devereux said. Other law enforcement agencies picked up the pursuit, which ended in the 1700 block of West Myrtle Street when he ran into the halfway house, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
