A second-alarm fire that started in an abandoned theater in Old Town Indio Saturday caused an estimated $1 million in damage, fire officials said.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 7:08 a.m. in the 42500 block of Fargo Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters reported that the theater was well involved with fire when they arrived at the scene.

The Indio Police Department said Fargo Street between Civic Center Drive and Indio Boulevard would remain closed for four to six hours as fire crews continue to work to contain the flames.

Authorities said there may also be intermittent closures of other surrounding streets as needed and asked the public to avoid the area.

So far, firefighters’ efforts have prevented an estimated $3 million in damages to the buildings north and south of the theater, fire officials said.
