A fire damaged a residential property in Sylmar Thursday, and a firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of a “heat related illness.”

The fire was reported about 12:45 p.m. in the single-story building in the 13700 block of West Oscar Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

According to the LAFD, 68 firefighters “battled heavy fire and excessive storage conditions for 42 minutes to achieve knockdown.” Excessive storage outside the building created access issues for fire crews, and the flames threatened a pair of homes to the rear of the structure, but crews prevented the blaze from spreading.

A total of 19 firefighters were evaluated at the scene for heat exhaustion, and one was taken to a hospital in fair condition, according to the department.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire damaged the house, the patio, and a detached garage at the property, according to the fire department. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
