Deputies chased down a suspected car thief who ran after crashing at the end of vehicle chase, then saved her from serious injury or worse when she jumped over the third-floor railing of a Temple City motel and nearly fell, authorities said Wednesday.

The brief chase ended shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Rosemead Boulevard and Longden Avenue, according to officials at the sheriff’s Temple Station.

Destiny Ortiz, 21, of South El Monte, fled the crash scene and made her way to the third floor of the Golden Motel in the 6300 block of Rosemead Boulevard, where she jumped over a railing in an attempt to escape, officials said.

Deputies grabbed Ortiz by an arm and kept her from falling, eventually pulling the young woman to safety, sheriff’s Lt. Mark Reyes said.

“After the suspect was brought to safety, she was transported to a local hospital,” Reyes said. “Preliminary investigation indicates the suspect was possibly under the influence of narcotics.”

Ortiz was booked on suspicion of driving a vehicle without its owner’s consent and was being held without bail because she had an outstanding arrest warrant for the same offense in an unrelated case, Reyes said.
