Students from Western Center Academy in Hemet Sunday continued celebrating their second championship of the Riverside County Academic Decathlon, announced the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools.
Western Center Academy won the first decathlon in the school’s history last year, and were champions again this year allowing them to represent Riverside County at the state competition in March in Santa Clara.
Beaumont High School was announced in second place, while Elsinore High School took third place.
The academic decathlon was the 41st annual competition and featured teams from 11 Riverside County high schools from eight school districts with the theme ”Technology and Humanity”.
The competition started virtually with essay writing and objective tests on Jan. 13 followed by a speech and interview competition and Super Quiz on Saturday.
The California Academic Decathlon will be held Mar. 22-23 in Santa Clara, and the winners advance ti the United States Academic Decathlon from Apr. 25-27 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Each team is composed of nine students, three from each grade point category, and includes three honor students with GPAs of 3.80 to 4.00, three scholastic students with GPAs of 3.20 to 3.799 and three varsity students with GPAs of 0.00 to 3.199.
