A shooting suspect was taken into custody after being arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder, authorities said Thursday.
Palm Springs Police Department personnel responded to the shooting report at approximately 9:40 p.m. Oct. 17, according to a department statement published the following day. Upon arriving at the scene, west of Andreas Road and North Palm Canyon Drive, the officers began to investigate.
The department was told that the shooting followed a large fight, according to the statement
Two juveniles, one described as “in critical condition,” were transported to a local hospital, officers said. The other’s injuries were described as “non-life-threatening.”
Both have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home, according to a follow-up statement released Thursday.
A department investigation led officers to believe that 20-year-old local resident Felipe Vargas was a suspect, officers said. PSPD detectives executed a search warrant on Jan. 2 at a North Palm Springs residence, which led to the arrest of Vargas.
Inmate records indicate Vargas was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder. He pleaded not guilty to both charges on Monday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio and is scheduled for a felony settlement conference Tuesday, according to case records.
