A 24-year-old felon was charged Wednesday with stabbing another man in a fight over a woman at a bar in Orange when he was on probation.
Giovanni Fernando Coria was charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies, with sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder and inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.
Coria, who was arrested Monday, did not enter a plea Wednesday at his arraignment, which was rescheduled for April 15 in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
Coria was on probation when he is accused of attacking the victim March 8, according to court records. He pleaded guilty in August to a felony count of carrying a loaded gun in public and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
According to a probation violation petition, Coria was accused of confronting a man in the parking lot of the bar at 2765 N. Orange Olive Road, near Lincoln Avenue, March 8. Coria was accused of going to his vehicle to retrieve a “kitchen-style knife” that was 8 to 10 inches long, according to the probation violation petition.
Coria allegedly slashed the rear tire of the victim’s vehicle, prompting the victim to defend himself with a broken glass whiskey bottle, according to the court papers. The conflict escalated into a fight and the victim was stabbed in the abdomen but the injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Police used surveillance footage to capture a partial license plate from the defendant’s pickup truck as it left the scene, according to court records.
