A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle in Newport Beach Wednesday.
Officers responded at approximately 12:45 p.m. Wednesday near East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive to reports of a major collision, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
A preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle collided with the pedestrian in the westbound lanes of Coast Highway, west of the intersection.
Police said several bystanders immediately began to render life-saving measures to the pedestrian until emergency personnel arrived at the location.
Despite those efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Newport Beach Fire Department personnel.
Detectives assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the area and have assumed the investigation.
The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
