A Cypress man who authorities said was evading police crashed his vehicle into the Manhattan Beach pier early Thursday morning, causing damage to a lifeguard building and a cement bench.
Devin Ashley Chavez, 28, was booked on suspicion of felony evading police, cocaine possession and driving under the influence following a wild crash, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department
Police said officers initially spotted Chavez’s vehicle driving without lights on near the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard at around 1 a.m. When an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, Chavez sped off down Manhattan Beach Boulevard at a high rate of speed, police said.
Police said they backed off the pursuit but Chavez continued to drive towards the pier. Chavez subsequently crashed his vehicle through a concrete barrier at the beginning of the pier, then continued further down the pier before crashing into a concrete bench, police said.
Firefighters responded to the scene and transported Chavez to the hospital before he was booked into jail.
No injuries to the public or police officers were reported and the pier remained open Thursday, police said.
