A man was killed early Wednesday in a rollover crash in Gardena.
Officers responded just before 2 a.m. to a report of a crash at 166th Street and Normandie Avenue and found an SUV overturned against a wrought-iron gate in the parking lot of Diana’s Mexican Food Products at 16529 S. Normandie Ave., according to Sgt. Mark Thompson, the Gardena Police Department’s traffic bureau supervisor.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that a black 2009 BMW SUV containing one male white was driving northbound (on) Normandie Avenue,” Thompson said. “Upon crossing 166th Street, the vehicle for unknown reasons struck the west curb of Normandie Avenue, crossed the sidewalk, then into a wrought-iron gate. The vehicle came to rest upside down against the gate.”
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel freed the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Thompson said.
The driver’s name was not immediately released.
It was unclear if speed, drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
Normandie Avenue between Gardena Boulevard and 168th Street was closed in both directions following the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash was urged to call Gardena Police Department Traffic Investigator Toshio Hirai at (310) 217-6135 or Thompson at (310) 217-6183.
