A leaking hot water pipe flooded an apartment building in Irvine early Wednesday, displacing more than two dozen of its residents.

Multiple residents of the Modera Irvine apartments at 2850 Kelvin Ave. called firefighters just before 2 a.m. when a hallway ceiling partially collapsed, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.

A six-inch hot water pipe leaked water from the fourth floor into an electrical room on the ground level, Concialdi said. An on-site property manager shut off water, while firefighters turned off the electricity and evacuated 29 adults and one child, Concialdi said.

American Red Cross workes helped some residents find temporary shelter at area motels, while others waited in a community room, Concialdi said.

A woman who tripped while being led out of the building was taken to Saddleback Hospital in Laguna Hills to be checked out, he said.
