A mail truck veered off an eastern San Diego County roadway Tuesday and plowed into a market, winding up almost entirely inside the business with a postal worker trapped and unconscious behind the wheel.

A clerk and a customer at the liquor-grocery store in the 9500 block of Jamacha Boulevard in La Presa narrowly avoided being hit when the delivery vehicle smashed into the building shortly after 11 a.m., according to San Miguel Fire & Rescue.

It took emergency crews about 10 minutes to free the unresponsive mailman from the wreckage, SMFR Battalion Chief Justin Fuller said. Medics performed CPR on him at the scene before taking him to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, where his condition was not released.

It was unclear if the federal employee may have suffered a medical emergency that caused him to pass out and crash his work vehicle.

A bystander suffered superficial injuries in the wreck and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for an evaluation, Fuller said.

A civil engineer was summoned to gauge the structural integrity of the commercial building, which was extensively damaged by the accident. The California Highway Patrol was called in to determine the cause of the accident.
