The Los Angeles Department of Transportation has received four Outstanding Project Awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch including for its pandemic response programs, the department announced Wednesday.

LADOT was awarded:

— an outstanding emergency response/preparedness project award for its COVID-19 pandemic response programs, which worked with Los Angeles communities to provide support and relief, including through the al fresco program, food/retail pick-up zones, COVID-19 testing and vaccination site support, slow streets program, Los Angeles Unified School District Grab ‘n’ Go support, Los Angeles County Food Drive support, and redesigned signal timing across the city to help the hardest hit businesses and Angelenos;

— an outstanding bikeways and trails project award for its Fifth Street and Sixth Street improvement project, which added protected bicycle lanes on Fifth and Sixth streets from Spring Street to Central Avenue. LADOT said the improvement provided an east-west link for east downtown Los Angeles communities, such as Skid Row and the industrial district, to access the Main Street and Spring Street corridors;

— an outstanding applied mapping technology project award for its GIS strategic plan, which uses all available department and city data to create a network to identify priority projects in relation to Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Green New Deal. Data relating to micro transit, electric vehicle charging in public right of way, equitability infrastructure, and more are analyzed to better provide services to underserved neighborhoods and constituents; and

— an outstanding big data project award for its pandemic travel behavior study, which analyzed travel trends during the pandemic and affirmed long-standing racial inequities created by decades of policies meant to oppress people of color, according to the department.

The branch also recognized two department employees, Brian Phan and Joan Hsu, for the outstanding civil engineer awards.
