A 20-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday after crashing with a pickup truck in Sage.
The crash was reported at 9:50 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Red Mountain and Sage roads, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The motorcyclist was riding a 2016 BMW S1100 motorcycle northbound on Sage Road just north of Red Mountain Road at approximately 90 to 100 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol, while a 49-year-old Hemet man and driver of a 2011 Nissan Frontier was southbound on Sage just north of Red Mountain at approximately 45 to 50 mph.
The motorcyclist approached a curve in the roadway, but was traveling at a speed too fast to safely traverse the curve in the roadway, according to the CHP. He lost control of the motorcycle, causing him and the motorcycle to slide across the painted solid double yellow lines separating the northbound and southbound lanes.
The motorcyclist slid into the right front of the Nissan and suffered major injuries, the CHP reported. The Camp Pendleton-based young man was pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately confirmed whether he was a member of the United States Marine Corps. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured, but remained on scene to cooperate with CHP investigators.
The CHP reminded all motorists to be mindful of speed while driving, as it is the number-one cause of traffic collisions.
