A brush fire that erupted in a remote area near Gorman, quickly spreading across about 5 acres and prompting a response from Los Angeles County, city and U.S. Forest Service fire crews, has not grown Friday, but is still active.

The fire was reported around 5:40 p.m. Thursday near state Route 138 and Quail Lake Road, just off the Golden State (5) Freeway. Initially reported at about 3 to 4 acres in heavy brush, the fire was estimated at about 5 acres as of 6:30 p.m., advancing slowly.

County fire crews on the scene reported that the blaze, dubbed the Franklin Fire, was not immediately threatening any structures, but it had the potential to burn several hundred acres. The prediction prompted a major aerial response with multiple water-dropping aircraft dispatched to the scene.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries, and it was unclear what sparked the fire.

The National Weather Service reported temperatures of 80 to 83 degrees around the time the fire broke out, with winds of 18 mph, gusting to 28 mph.
