Fire broke out in an apartment above a garage in the Corona del Mar area of Newport Beach, authorities said Saturday.
The fire was reported at 5:46 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of Heliotrope Avenue, near Bayside Drive, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department. A neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke.
Arriving firefighters found the upstairs unit filled with smoke and flames in the entryway, officials said. Firefighters quickly put out the flames and a search of the residence revealed a cat hiding under a bed in a back room which was rescued.
Damage was limited to the apartment, no injuries were reported and the Newport Beach animal control sheltered the cat until the owner was available, officials said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
