Firefighters rescued a cat from an apartment fire above a garage in the Corona del Mar area of Newport Beach, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 5:46 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of Heliotrope Avenue, near Bayside Drive, according to the Newport Beach Fire Department. A neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke.

Arriving firefighters found the upstairs unit filled with smoke and flames in the entryway, officials said. They quickly put out the flames and a search of the residence revealed a hairless cat hiding under a bed in a back room.

Damage was limited to the apartment, and no injuries were reported.

Newport Beach animal control personnel sheltered the cat until the owner was available, officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
