A brush fire erupted Wednesday just south of Highway 371 in Aguanga, burning nearly five acres and spreading south until Cal Fire air tankers slowed it down.
The non-injury Homestead Fire was reported at about 12:10 p.m. along Homestead Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine and hand crews from the county were sent to the location, preceded by Cal Fire aircraft, encountering flames moving at a moderate rate, initially to the southeast.
The brusher’s direction changed to due south, pushing toward one property, at about 12:40 p.m.
Two Cal Fire air tankers immediately initiated a series of runs on the blaze, slowing its advance, according to reports from the scene.
A battalion chief coordinating operations said the blaze had the potential to expand to 50 acres. However, winds were not an immediate major factor, officials said.
The fire started less than a mile northeast of where the 2,300-acre Bonny Fire broke out last month. It was contained during the first week of this month.
It was unclear what might have triggered the Homestead Fire.
