A swimmer died by drowning in West Newport Beach, authorities said Thursday.

According to Newport Beach Public Information Manager John Pope, more than two dozen Newport and Huntington Beach lifeguards searched for the swimmer for approximately 40 minutes on Wednesday around 7 p.m. The person was not immediately publicly identified.

Lifeguards responded at Tower 74 near the Santa Ana River and notified the Newport Beach Police and Fire departments to assist in a rescue operation.
