The filing deadline for Orange County’s 47th Congressional District was extended to Wednesday because as expected, Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, filed to run for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by the late Dianne Feinstein instead of reelection.
Under state law, the filing deadline is extended five days when an incumbent eligible to run for reelection does not.
Ten potential candidates have filed to run — four Democrats, three Republicans and three with no party preference, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
The Democrats are Sen. Dave Min, D-Irvine; voting rights advocate Joanna Weiss; small business owner/publisher Boyd Roberts; and Shariq Zaidi, a security officer.
The Republicans are former Assemblyman Scott Baugh, who lost to Porter, 51.7%-48.3% in 2022; business owner Max Ukropina; and James B. Griffin, who did not list an occupation.
The no party preference candidates are economics professor Terry L. Crandall; chemical engineer Tom McGrath; and retired general counsel Bill Smith.
The 47th District stretches from Seal Beach to Laguna Beach and also includes Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach.
The list of candidates who have qualified for the ballot will be released Dec. 28, according to the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
