A brush fire that erupted Thursday adjacent to Highway 62 in North Palm Springs scorched close to five acres and prompted California Highway Patrol officers to shut down a traffic lane for public safety before it was stopped.
The non-injury “62 Fire” was reported at 3:20 p.m. Thursday in the area of the four-lane highway and Painted Hills Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning at a slow rate in light vegetation between Route 62 and Worsley Road.
CHP officers closed the No. 2 lane on the northbound side of the highway at the request of firefighters trying to establish containment lines, according to reports from the scene.
No Cal Fire aircraft were requested.
The fire’s forward rate of spread was stopped at 4:15 p.m.
Crews were working to tie up gaps and fully contain the brusher by 5 p.m.
No homes were threatened.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
