A brush fire that erupted Thursday adjacent to Highway 62 in North Palm Springs scorched nine acres and prompted California Highway Patrol officers to shut down a traffic lane for public safety before it was contained.
The non-injury “62 Fire” was reported at 3:20 p.m. in the area of the four-lane corridor and Painted Hills Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames that had broken out in two places, moving at a slow rate in light vegetation between Route 62 and Worsley Road.
No homes were threatened.
CHP officers closed the No. 2 lane on the northbound side of the highway at the request of firefighters.
No Cal Fire aircraft were requested.
The two fires were almost merged and treated as one. The forward rate of spread for both was stopped at 4:15 p.m.
Firefighters achieved full containment shortly after 5 p.m.
The cause of the brushers was under investigation.
