A brush fire that started north of Idyllwild-Pine Cove in the San Bernardino National Forest Friday charred about 10 acres before it was stopped.

The non-injury Cove Fire was reported at 2:20 p.m. Friday east of Highway 243 near the mountain communities, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine crews from the county and U.S. Forest Service were sent to the location and encountered flames in thick vegetation, moving at a slow rate, with no structures in the immediate vicinity.

The highway was not impacted.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters initiated runs on the brusher that slowed its advance, bringing the forward rate of spread to a halt shortly before 5 p.m., according to officials at the scene.

All aircraft had cleared the location by 5 p.m.

Firefighters were working to strengthen tentative containment lines, contending with periodic spot fires outside of the main brusher.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
