Two brush fires separated by less than a quarter mile erupted Wednesday in Jurupa Valley, scorching roughly 12 acres before firefighters began encircling them.
The non-injury brushers were reported at 3:20 p.m. in the area of Granite Hill Drive and Pedley Road, just north of the Pomona (60) Freeway, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine and hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate pace along the foot of a hillside.
A residence was briefly threatened by one of the fires, but crews established a protective perimeter that prevented any damage.
No evacuation warnings were pending as of 4 p.m.
Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters were requested to make runs on the fires, which were bounded by surrounding paved and dirt roads, according to reports from the scene.
Firefighters were making gradual progress establishing containment lines less than an hour after the brushers started.
There was no word regarding what might have triggered the fires. Itinerants are known to camp out in the surrounding hills.
