A gas main break on a residential street in Woodcrest Friday prompted evacuations of surrounding homes and a road closure while the line was repaired.
The rupture was reported at 2:20 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Boulder Avenue and Wood Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said that multiple engine crews were sent to the location and discovered a 2-inch line split open, apparently due to construction activity at the site.
Firefighters immediately initiated efforts to shut off the gas with assistance from a SoCal Gas Company technician. Meanwhile, sheriff’s deputies evacuated more than a dozen properties and shut down Boulder, between Wood to the east and Obsidian Drive to the west, for public safety.
A fire department hazardous materials unit was called to assist with mitigation, which was completed by 4:30 p.m., at which point the evacuations were lifted, officials said.
SoCal Gas technicians were working to replace the damaged line late Friday afternoon.
