Rep. Maxine Waters has secured more than $2 million in federal funding for facility improvements at Compton College, college officials announced Wednesday.

The funding, awarded through the federal Community Project Funding process, will support renovations to two buildings, according to Compton College.

Officials said $1.2 million will go toward upgrades to the Math and Science Building, while $850,000 will fund improvements to the Vocational Technology Building.

“This investment represents a meaningful step forward for Compton College and the students we serve,” Juanita Doplemore, president of the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “Modern, safe, and accessible facilities are essential to student success, and we are grateful to Congresswoman Waters for her continued advocacy on behalf of the students and communities served by our district.”

District CEO Keith Curry said the funding reflects Waters’ continued support for the college and surrounding communities.

“We are extremely grateful for her long-standing commitment to Compton College, support of equity and access for its students, and continued advocacy for underserved communities,” Curry said.

Waters, D-Los Angeles, said the funding will help improve learning environments for students and faculty.

“I look forward to seeing the dedicated faculty and talented students at Compton College make use of these newly renovated facilities to achieve their educational goals,” Waters said.

Officials said renovations to the Math and Science Building will extend the life of the facility and support future use as a dedicated math instruction space, while upgrades to the vocational building will enhance workforce training programs tied to the regional economy.

The projects are part of broader campus improvement efforts supported by local bond measures and federal funding.
