A brush fire broke out Friday near the Los Angeles County-Kern County border, burning approximately 1,600 acres of brush before its progress was stopped.

The Macy Fire was reported at about 2:45 p.m. Friday near Highway 138 and North 110th Street West in the unincorporated community of Fairmont with flames initially burning about 100 acres of brush, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The blaze grew to about 660 acres by 3:35 p.m. and was upgraded to a third alarm fire. It then grew to 1,100 acres as it moved north toward Kern County.

By 5 p.m., firefighters reported that the blaze had crossed into Kern County, growing to 1,400 acres.

The fire increased to 1,600 acres scorched as of 6:25 p.m., with evacuation warnings in place for affected areas, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Several residents in the area were initially advised to shelter in place. A stretch of Highway 138 was also closed in the area.

The fire’s progress was stopped at 7:09 p.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.
