One person was listed in critical condition Friday after two big rigs and at least two other vehicles crashed Friday, spilling diesel fuel and spreading debris on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar.
California Highway Patrol were called at 1:48 a.m. Friday to the eastbound freeway at the Roxford Street exit, where officers initially reported a vehicle was blocking the middle lanes of the freeway. Then, the multi-vehicle crash was discovered, which included a victim trapped inside one of the big rigs and a big rig hanging over the freeway’s embankment, a CHP officer and Los Angeles Fire Department told City News Service.
The trapped person was freed from the big rig by fire department personnel and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two additional victims were reported to be in fair condition and taken to a hospital, said LAFD spokesman Jamie Stewart.
Approximately 54 fire personnel were called to the scene, Stewart said.
A Caltrans crew joined a hazardous material unit at the scene to clean up diesel fuel and debris from the middle lanes of the freeway, the CHP reported.
The crash closed all lanes of the eastbound freeway at Roxford until about 8:30 a.m., when two of the three closed lanes were reopened.
