A brush fire that burned about 600 acres in Moreno Valley and caused the brief shutdown of a freeway was 50% contained Sunday.
The Iron Fire was reported around 2 p.m. Saturday in the area of state Route 60 and Ironwood Avenue. Responding crews said the fire was threatening the freeway, which was closed at Gilman Springs Road. All lanes of the freeway were reopened by around 9 p.m. Saturday.
At the initial report, the fire was burning 10 acres, but had jumped to 600 acres by the evening.
Additional engines and air resources were assisting with the fire, including three helicopters and 130 firefighters. Forward progress was stopped later Saturday, and crews spent the night working on containment lines.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
