Los Angeles International Airport was awarded nearly $290 million in federal funds through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Infrastructure Grants program.
According to the DOT, the funding announced Tuesday for LAX will be used for construction of a terminal access road at the airport. LAX was awarded $289.3 million for the project.
Hawthorne Municipal Airport was awarded $700,771 to rehabilitate taxiway lighting. Brackett Field in La Verne was awarded $862,695 for terminal improvements.
Overall, the DOT awarded 339 grants to airports in 44 states and two territories. The grants totaled roughly $870 million, according to the department. The grants are designed ti improve infrastructure, enhance safety and add “family-friendly features” at airports.
“From our regional hubs to some of America’s busiest airports, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will provide American families with a more seamless, efficient travel experience for years to come,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said in a statement. “Upgrading our runway infrastructure is part of our work to usher in the Golden Age of Transportation.”
