Hundreds of law enforcement officers, friends and relatives gave a final farewell Tuesday to a 28-year-old Covina police officer who was killed when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV.
Officer Jordan Corder was on duty when his motorcycle struck a Honda SUV that turned left in front of him at the intersection of North Citrus Avenue and West Puente Street around 2 p.m. Sept. 30.
Corder was thrown from the motorcycle and the other driver, a 75-year- old woman who was the sole occupant of the SUV, was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released.
“Jordan always aspired to be a traffic officer,” Covina Police Department Chief Kim Raney said during Corder’s funeral at Pomona First Baptist Church. “I know, you look at these motor guys in front of me, they’re saying to themselves, ‘What else is there?’ OK, so let’s be honest with each other. We all know there’s cops, and there’s motor cops.”
Following the funeral, a procession led from the church to Covina’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park for a graveside service, although Corder is expected to be actually buried in Arizona, where his parents live, NBC4 reported.
Raney said last week Corder may have been responding to a traffic violation when the crash occurred.
Corder, who was pronounced dead at Citrus Valley Medical Center- Intercommunity Campus in Covina, was a seven-year veteran of the Covina Police Department and a member of its traffic division since May. He is survived by his wife, Kelsey; his father, Mark, a retired Covina police captain; and his mother, Diane. His sister, Melissa Coterel, is a police dispatcher in Ontario.
The fatal collision is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which will forward its findings to the Covina Police Department, CHP Officer Peter Bishop said.
