A man who allegedly stole an ambulance from paramedics who were treating him and crashed it was charged Tuesday with carjacking and other crimes.
Mohamed Zahir, 21, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on two counts of carjacking and one count each of attempted carjacking and fleeing police causing serious bodily injury.
Paramedics sent to the 200 block of San Pedro Street about 7:20 p.m. Sunday strapped Zahir to a gurney after he reportedly told them he’d taken the drug “spice.”
Prosecutors said he unbuckled himself, ran off and tried to get in a woman’s a Toyota Camry. When the woman honked her car horn, Zahir ran back to the ambulance, got behind the wheel and drove off.
Paramedics bailed out of the vehicle as it was driven away, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Police, as well as a fire captain, chased the ambulance until Zahir crashed it into a minivan near Beverly Boulevard and Union Place.
If convicted, Zahir could face up to 16 years and two months in prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
