A stabbing attack during a fight over a parking space at a Santa Fe Springs swap meet left a 43-year-old mother dead and a man and woman charged with her murder, authorities said Thursday.
Elizabeth Yanez was stabbed in front of her two adult children, 22 and 23 years old, in the parking lot of the Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet in the 13900 block of Alondra Boulevard.
It was there that Whittier police officers — who patrol Santa Fe Springs — were sent about 9:30 p.m. Friday to investigate a fight report.
When they arrived, they found Yanez on the ground with multiple stab wounds to her neck and back, police said.
She was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she was pronounced dead.
“After obtaining crucial evidence a the scene, Whittier PD detectives were able to develop a possible suspect vehicle and potential suspects in South Los Angeles,” according to a police statement.
On Saturday, they arrested Reggie Cervantes, 22, and Brenda Rangel, 19, on suspicion of murder, police said.
Both were charged Tuesday with one count of murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon for using a knife to attack another victim, Daniel Crable, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
They are each being held in lieu of $1 million, Cervantes at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles and Rangel at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, according to sheriff’s online inmate records.
Rangel was arraigned on Tuesday, pled not guilty and was due in court in Norwalk Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, District Attorney’s spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said.
Cervantes’ arraignment was continued to Nov. 20 in Norwalk, she said.
Cervantes has a prior robbery conviction, according to the DA’s office.
