A fire damaged a Northridge home Tuesday, killing seven cats and displacing five people, a fire department spokeswoman said.

The blaze at 17450 W. Chase St. started about 2:45 p.m. and burned for 21 minutes until firefighters could put it out, according to Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire started in one room, but caused damage throughout the house, Main said. How the fire started was not immediately known.

Two dogs and two cats were rescued from the house, and five people were displaced by the fire. They were being aided by the Red Cross.

No one was in the house when the fire started. A neighbor, who apparently breathed some smoke, was treated at the scene by paramedics, Main said.
