A Gardena man was charged Thursday with capital murder for a barber’s shooting death during an April 25 robbery in South Los Angeles.
Mark Lequan Alford, 35, pleaded not guilty today in Kevin Williams’ death.
Prosecutors allege that Alford and another man went into the barber shop in the 6500 block of South Western Avenue and demanded valuables from Williams. The barber resisted and a fight broke out in which Alford allegedly fatally shot Williams, according to prosecutors.
The murder charge includes the special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a robbery, along with an allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a handgun.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will decide later if it will seek the death penalty against Alford.
Alford, who remains jailed, was arrested Tuesday by the Los Angeles police.
