A suspect ran from detectives and barricaded himself inside a San Pedro market for five hours before being taken into custody Friday afternoon.

Detectives were looking for the man in the area of Ninth and Centre streets about 9:30 a.m. when they spotted him, prompting him to run into the Numero Uno Market in the 500 block of South Pacific Avenue, said Sgt. Brad Hearn, watch commander of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Station.

It was feared the man might be armed, so a SWAT team was sent to the scene and the immediate area was evacuated, police said.

Officers entered the market about 2:30 p.m. and the suspect surrendered without further incident, according to Hearn. His name and age were not immediately available, and it was unclear why detectives were originally looking for him.

No weapon was immediately found, but officers continued to search the market after the man’s arrest, Hearn said.
