Police officers in Pasadena arrested a man and a woman for allegedly pulling a gun on a police officer who fired a shot at them during a routine traffic stop on Sunday.
The driver was briefly chased but escaped into the night authorities said.
The no-hit officer-involved shooting happened during a routine traffic stop for a traffic violation about 3:20 a.m. near Avocado Lane and Estado Street, said Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema.
“At least one of the officers walked up to the car and saw it (a handgun),” Hettema said. “He took off at a high rate of speed and one of the officers fired one shot as he drove off.”
Officers pursued the vehicle for a short distance, but lost sight of it in the vicinity of Sierra Madre Boulevard and the Foothill (210) Freeway, according to a news statement from the Pasadena Police Department.
No officers were injured, Hettema said.
Pasadena police worked with the Southwest Regional Pacific Fugitive Task Force on a follow-up investigation that led them to a public parking lot in Van Nuys where two suspects were arrested late Sunday afternoon without incident, Pasadena police Lt. Terysa Rojas said.
They were identified as 32-year-old Pasadena resident Sanjay Varma, a reported gang member associate and 22-year-old Moreno Valley resident Crystal Orleans, Rojas said.
They were booked into the Pasadena city jail for assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer with bail set at $50,000, she said.
The investigation continued, Rojas said.
