A 44-year-old man was in custody Monday on suspicion of shooting his 25-year-old brother to death after a fistfight escalated at a gathering in Compton, authorities said.

Homicide detectives were dispatched to the 2400 block of West Tichenor Street about 4:50 p.m. Sunday to investigate the killing, said sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Moody of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Davion Branch of Compton died at the scene, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

Dion Landry of Carson was booked on suspicion of murder, and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, the sheriff’s department reported.

Landry told deputies he shot his brother, according to Moody, who added that a handgun believed to be the murder weapon was recovered at the scene.

“According to witnesses, the two brothers got into a verbal argument, which escalated into a physical fight,” Moody said. “At the conclusion of the fight, the suspect left the location and returned with a handgun, which he used to shoot and kill the victim.”
