A 26-year-old man who allegedly threatened to kill his mother was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies who used a Taser on him before he stopped breathing and died at a hospital, authorities said Wednesday.

Deputies were sent to a residence in the 1600 block of East 123rd Street about 9:20 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a disturbance, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“The suspect’s mother called Century Station to report her son was under the influence of drugs and threatening her life,” Saldana said.

“When the deputies arrived at the location, (they) contacted the suspect’s mother, who told them her 26-year-old son was inside her home and was refusing to leave,” Saldana said. “He also threatened her life by saying he could kill her.”

Deputies then entered the home, with the woman’s permission, Saldana said.

“When the suspect saw the deputies, he became agitated and hostile and charged them,” Saldana said. “One of the deputies used a Taser to subdue the suspect.”

Deputies handcuffed the man — identified today by the coroner’s office as Brian O. Pickett of Los Angeles — and summoned paramedics to remove the Taser darts, Saldana said.

“While he was being treated by the paramedics, the suspect stopped breathing,” Saldana said.

Pickett was taken to a hospital, where he died.
